Ing. Nikolaus Foidl

Renewable Energies / Biotechnology

email: nikolaus@madkem.at

Nikolaus started his career 1977 at the Department of Environmental Research in Graz / Austria. As an independent project manager, he became head of the department of biomass utilization.
Concentrating on biogas, biomass utilization and farm management, he implemented sustainable projects in Cabo Verde, working for the Institute of International Cooperation in Vienna. While working on an eleven year biomass project in Nicaragua, he founded a biomass institute with five different departments at the Technical University of Managua. Additionally, Nikolaus worked for more than 2 years as scientific director of an agro industrial farm in Bolivia, where he gained lots of experience with biofuels, moringa and biochar. After spending one year in Australia as a research and development consultant for biochar, he returned to Austria in 2010.

Recognition / Patents:
  • Biogas system with two reactors working in series for separation of acidic and methanogenic phase.
  • Process of trans-esterification by injecting methanol and catalyst into the pressing chamber of a screw-press obtaining a methyl ester with 99,5% purity.
  • Process of overcritical extraction by injecting solvents in overcritical conditions into the pressing chambers of a screw press, obtaining press and extraction efficiencies up to 99,5 %.
  • Process for continuous trans-esterification in one step. The first step is simulated by using ester as a circulating carrier (loop) for oil-methanol. The catalyst is used just in the second step.
  • Process to obtain green, high protein fodder pellets from Moringa olifeira and as a by-product hormone concentrate that can be applied in various cultures as a growth enhancer.
  • Process to obtain a Biochar mineral complex for soil improvement.
